National Technology Day

National Technology Day is celebrated in India on the 11th of May every year. On this day in 1998, the country conducted three successful nuclear tests at the Indian Army’s Pokhran Test Range under Operation Shakti. Two more nuclear tests were conducted on May 13, led by late President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, which made India an official member of the elite club of nuclear power nations. On the same day, they also tested their first indigenous aircraft, Hansa-3, and conducted a successful test firing of the Trishul missile.
The Prime Minister at the time, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, declared May 11 as a day of noteworthy achievement and a huge milestone for the country, and National Technology Day was observed for the first time on May 11, 1999. Since then, the Technology Development Board has been honoring scientists and engineers for their technological innovations which contribute to the growth of India. The person that laid the foundations of modern and scientific India, Vikram Ambalal Sarabhai was an Indian physicist and astronomer. He initiated space research and helped develop nuclear power in India. He was honored with Padma Bhushan in 1966 and the Padma Vibhushan in 1972. He is internationally regarded as the Father of the Indian Space Program. He was one of the key figures who paved the way for a modern India that aches technological and scientific achievements.
Since then, India hasn’t looked back and has an inventory holding approximately 160 nuclear warheads.
The constant hunger to achieve the impossible makes India as great as it is today. Today, India has come a long way by keeping that hunger still alive as they make significant technological advancements even to this date. The ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) has been outstanding in executing multiple missions of huge significance in the past decade. One of which was conducted on 15 February 2017 as ISRO made a world record by successfully launching the highest number of satellites (104) on a single rocket from Satish Dhawan Space Center, Sriharikota, thereby breaking Russia’s record of 37 satellites aboard the Dnepr rocket in a single flight in 2014.
Today, apart from the space missions and nuclear advancements, India is growing as the number of entrepreneurs is on the rise with so many new startups becoming unicorns. Globally, 1 in 10 unicorns are born in India, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said on May 6, 2022. With the 100th unicorn that India has the total valuation of all these companies reaches $332.7 billion.
Data from the ministry shows that since the launch of the Startup India initiative on 16 January 2016, a staggering number of more than 69,000 startups have been recognized in the country till 2nd May 2022.
Innovation in India goes beyond just a few sectors; the data indicates how 56 diverse sectors incorporate this huge wave of advancement with 13% from IT services, 9% from health and life sciences, 7% from education, 5% from professional and commercial services, 5% from agriculture and 5% food and beverages.
