Air Purifier vs Air Ionizer

May 02, 2022

Have you ever wanted to escape to the mountains or the forest because you are sick of breathing in pollution? Well, most of us have felt like that at some point in our lives. Most of you must have felt the freshness when, at times, you wake up at dawn and breathe that fresh air. It feels so serene and refreshing to breathe in that air because it makes us feel alive.

Air purifier is something that is used today to generate a similar effect. They filter the air & trap toxic and harmful substances like bacteria, viruses, pollen, soot, & various types of contaminants. But there are various types of air purification systems. Not all air purifiers work in the same “filter-trap” method. Instead of just trapping, some destroy bacteria, viruses, allergens & all the other contaminants, namely, Air Ionizers.

Most have heard what an air purifier is but don’t have an idea of what an air ionizer is but there is a major difference between these two. Allow us to shed a little light.

Traditionally, air purifiers clean the air by filtering out harmful dust, bacteria & viruses from the air. The most widely used filters are called HEPA filters. The best HEPA filters can filter up to 99.97% of the air. This includes all the germs, bacteria, allergens, etc. up to 0.3 microns in size. The backdrop of using HEPA filters or any filters for that matter is that they don’t actually kill all the germs, viruses, allergens, etc. Rather they just filter it out of the air & trap them in the built-in HEPA filters. This adds to the maintenance cost that comes along with filter-based purifiers, which you need to clean and maintain regularly.

An Air Ionizer is an air purifier that uses ionization technology to actually kill the viruses as well as other harmful substances from the air. It does so by throwing out charged ions in the air that bond with these viruses and kills them. The major advantage an air ionizer has over an air purifier is that it actually kills the virus rather than just filtering it out. In turn, there’s no maintenance cost because there are no filters involved in the process of purification. The negative ions associated with ionizers have been identified to positively affect psychological health, productivity, and overall well-being & could help those with seasonal affective disorder (SAD).

One con of air ionizers is believed to be the ozone generation that comes with ionization. The Burge Ion Dome is an air ionizer that neutralizes that threat as well. We have a certified BDL ozone generation. What does that mean? It means all the benefits of air ionizers minus ozone generation.

Unlike air purifiers, the Burge Ion Dome kills 99.99% of all viruses, bacteria, allergens, etc. from the surrounding air leaving fresh & healthy air for you to breathe.
